FFHS’ Schuster rolls to 3rd straight state golf title

By on October 29, 2019

First Flight High School’s indomitable Katherine Schuster fired a one-under-par 71 in the final round of the Women’s 1A/2A State Golf Championship at the Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines to win her third straight state high school title on Oct. 29.

Schuster, a Kill Devil Hills resident and First Flight junior, compiled a two-round score of 145 to defeat Katelyn Griggs of Gray Stone Day (153) by a stunning eight strokes. Third-place finishers Camryn Lamp of Newton-Conover and Maci Beaver of Roanoke Rapids finished 10 shots back at 155.

Shortly after winning the trophy, Schuster posted these remarks on twitter: “Super blessed to have pulled off my 3rd title as the 1A/2A golf state champion!!! Thank you very much to everybody for all of the wonderful support and encouragement!!! Couldn’t have done it without ya!!!”

To put it simply, it is getting hard to find new ways to describe Schuster’s dominance on the course.

In August of this year, she won the Hope Valley Junior Invitational golf title in Durham by eight strokes over her closest female competitor. In July, she took the title at Girls’ North & South Junior Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., shooting a one-over-par 217 for the three-day event. In June, she captured the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Golf Championship held at the Wilson Country Club.

Her resume also includes winning the prestigious 2018 National Drive, Chip and Putt Competition at the storied Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia, and of course, her two previous state individual high school golf championships in 2017 and 2018.
