Local Chefs Transform Canned Goods into Signature Dishes

Beach food Pantry and local chefs team up to raise funds to combat hunger and food insecurity with the 6th Annual Holiday Chefs’ Challenge on Nov. 15.

“What’s for dinner?” Everyone can relate to this question, right? For many people, this question brings a sense of excitement and anticipation.

But, for some Dare County residents, when budgets are tight and cupboards may be bare, this question can be a source of stress and frustration. They may even go without dinner completely.   

So, the Beach Food Pantry and local chefs are teaming up to bring awareness to hunger and food insecurity in our community and raise funds to combat it with the 6th Annual Holiday Chefs’ Challenge. The event will take place on Friday, November 15, 2019, from 6:30-10p at The Pavilion at Pirate’s Cove in Manteo.

The competing chefs will have one-hour to create a Signature Dish using items commonly distributed to clients at the Beach Food Pantry. Attendees vote for the People’s Choice awards, crowning a 2019 Prince or Princess of Canned Goods. And, judges will also award their favorites based on a combination of factors including taste, presentation and creativity.

A variety of ticket options are available. VIP Tickets are the best value. For $85 per person, they include samples of each of the Signature Dishes; admission to a VIP Reception prior to the event sponsored by Social House Vodka; and an open bar for the evening. There is also a General Admission ticket option for $60 or a Designated Driver Ticket for $50.

Monty Hooker will be playing live music. And, there will be silent and live auctions, as well as raffles, held during the course of the evening. Tickets can be purchased online at http://bit.ly/6HCCtixs and at the Beach Food Pantry (4007 N Croatan Hwy, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949).

Beach Food Pantry is a nonprofit community-based organization that has been providing direct assistance and referral services to Dare County residents for over 28 years. Clients are provided with approximately 2 weeks of free groceries in times of personal crisis or emergency. Clients may visit up to 4 times per year. Almost 4,000 individuals were served in 2018 and over 2,574 have already been served so far in 2019.  

Beach Food Pantry is stocked by donations from local Food Lion, Publix, Fresh Market and Walmart stores; Bimbo Bakeries; and individual and business donations. Special events and grants are also necessary to sustain operations. The Pantry is staffed mostly by volunteers and is graced by over 300 of them each year. Come by and take a tour!
