KDH Police release

Kill Devil Hills Police and surrounding law enforcement agencies responded to a shooting incident in the parking lot of the Brewing Station that occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 21.

At approximately 2:14 a.m., officers in the parking lot observed a burgundy Buick make a U-Turn in the west end of the parking lot. After hearing a shot fired from the vehicle, officers quickly converged and established control over the driver and two passengers. A .40 caliber Sig Sauer semiautomatic handgun was recovered from inside the vehicle along with a spent shell casing. There was also a bullet hole in the front windshield.

Based on the evidence at the scene and statements obtained during the investigation, it appeared that the driver of the vehicle, James Mullen, 32, of Elizabeth City had the gun in his hand as he was steering the vehicle and accidentally discharged the weapon. There were no reported injuries and the bullet was fired at an angle that precluded recovery.

Mr. Mullen was arrested for the discharge of the firearm and also for driving while impaired. The passengers were released with no charges.

The Kill Devil Hills Police Department would like to thank the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Nags Head PD, Kitty Hawk PD, Duck PD, Southern Shores PD, Vident Police and our outstanding Dare County telecommunicators who helped resolve this situation quickly, efficiently and without injury.

Was his gun registered. Probably not. Just think of all the other IDIOTS carrying…. what a loser

Nobody wants to say it but I will….The Brewing Station is turning into the old Port O Call regarding the crowds, the fights and now an accidental discharge of a weapon by a drunk person. It’s only a matter of time.

The incident with the driver, gun and alcohol…..honestly, this is the dumbest thing I have heard in several months..glad no one was injured. I am a gun owner, but I believe that a test to own a gun should be required….this guy clearly would have failed. No need to flame me….this is the opinion of a long time gun owner and is my viewpoint. Sadly, after this, he will likely NOT loose his rights to own a gun.

Driving while impaired. While holding a loaded firearm. While discharging said firearm through his own windshield. What the heck?

And the court system will slap his hand and let him go. That’s why it doesn’t get safer. People like that go free for another day to commit a crime or kill somebody!

No mention of where 170 employees will come from; however I have a good idea. Take employees from all of us who live with this problem every summer season with this year being the most difficult. That would be only solution since there is a shortage already of affordable housing. By the way, lets add some more traffic to our packed TWO roads. I am all for Business and hope all businesses on the OBX thrive but the powers to be must consider the impact of all this. Good Luck.

What’s truly scary is why did he even have it in his hand. Nobody just decides the try and drive while holding a gun. It makes no sense. What does make sense….he was motivated by something else, maybe being told to leave by bouncers. If cops were already there then maybe it had to do with them. What would have happened had the gun not gone off when it did, and was able to roll up to the building where folks are standing. All i can truly say is everyone that was there should feel lucky.

As my Grandmother always said, “nothing any good ever came from the bottle of whiskey!”

Could you have sensationalized the headline any more?

Expect more of this as we continue to jam more and more people into the northern beaches. Based on where he was from I can guess he was not here for beaches.
