A glorious start to another season on the Outer Banks

A  beautiful early summer day on the Kitty Hawk beach.

Summer has come to the Outer Banks, and what a spectacular beginning it has been. Warm sand, bright sunshine and a cool but not quite cold ocean. The surf’s been a bit choppy, but that’s a good reason to swim by the lifeguard stands.

We know the first official day of summer is June 21, but Memorial Day weekend has marked the beginning of the summer season for at least a couple of generations now, so who are we at Hidden Outer Banks to argue the point?

There’s a lot to celebrate this year heading into the summer.

It looks as though Ocracoke is getting a much needed shot in the arm with the introduction of a high speed passenger only ferry that will dock in Silver Lake. Big kudos to NCDOT for getting that one done.

Since we’re on the subject of Ocracoke, it seems Dr. Beach, Dr. Stephen Leatherman of Florida International University, has ranked the Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach as #2 on his top ten US beaches.

It’s not the first time Outer Banks beaches show up in the Dr. Beach rankings—in fact, they’re a regular part of them.

There’s more of great news for the upcoming season. The new Marc Basnight Bridge is pretty amazing. Duck has finished their muli-use path improvements which are pretty significant. With a bike path separate from the sidewalk, it’s taking pedestrian friendly to new level.

Mostly, though, the Outer Banks is what it has always been…a great place to dig your toes into the sand, take a deep breath, listen to the sound of the surf and just relax.

  • Kudos to Duck — Multi-path design is a real winnerLooking south at the new multi-use path in Duck. Walkers and runners to the right, Bike path in the middle. NC 12 on the left.

Foot traffic and bike…never the twain shall meet with this plan. No more joggers or walkers greeted with frantic cries of, “On your left. On your left,” from bicyclists. For anyone who has never experienced this, be assured, it can be pretty terrifying.

  • A sweet move: New digs put Jubilee Music in its full gloryThe complete inventory is now on display at Jubilee Music Store.

That inventory may have been available at the old location, but if that was the case — and it was — there was probably some sort of divine intervention that kept the original store from bursting at the seams.

  • Great food, great times at Food Truck ShowdownGreat weather, fantastic food and rocking music greeted crowds at the Outer Banks Food Truck Showdown on Sunday.

The weather was perfect with some great music from Of Good Nature. A great reggae sound with a strong, funky beat.   With 13 food trucks on hand and just five hours to sample as much as possible something had to give at Sunday’s Outer Banks Food Truck Showdown at the Event Site in Nags Head. And what seemed to give was anything approaching hunger for at least 24 hours. The weather was perfect with […]
