Two Outer Banks Association (OBAR) REALTOR® members were recognized at a recent General Membership Meeting for their dedication and volunteerism throughout the Outer Banks. Brook Sparks of Beach Realty & Construction-KH South and Kristine Kiousis of Beach Realty, NC were given OBAR’s prestigious Good Neighbor Award by Good Neighbor Committee Chair, Jimmy Anderson of Long & Foster–OBX and Aimee Pitts of OBAR’s Platinum Community Partner and Good Neighbor Award Sponsor Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.

The Good Neighbor Award program, originally created by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) in 2000, was adopted by OBAR in early 2017. Like NAR, OBAR began recognizing Outer Banks REALTORS® in good standing who make extraordinary commitments to improving the quality of life in their communities through volunteer work.

Sparks was recognized for her longtime dedication to and planning of the Wounded Warrior Duck Hunt & Escort event held each year in Currituck County. For this event, Sparks arranged free room and board, meals, activities, and an official police escort from Currituck to the Virginia state line where residents line the roads to salute these dedicated men and women.

In addition, Sparks chaired the 2019 Bowling Tourney Committee which raised over $4,300 in monetary donations as well as approximately 1,200 meals for local food pantries which made it the most successful bowling tourney to date.

Kristine Kiousis of Beach Realty, NC

Kristine Kiousis was honored with a Good Neighbor Award for her fundraising work done through her family’s business, “Stack ‘em High”. Kiousis, has jumped in and provided food at a moment’s notice for multiple events throughout the area–including breakfast for the 2018 OBAR Surf Fishing Tournament, a charity event benefiting the Association’s Scholarship & Disaster Relief Funds. She has continually opened their local restaurant to host fundraising efforts for many organizations in the Outer Banks.

Kiousis is also active in her church, her community of Chicahauk, and OBAR. As a member of OBAR for the past 14 years, she has volunteered her time by serving on multiple committees including Golf, Education, Scholarship, Membership, and even the Board of Directors from 2011-2012.

Previous recipient’s of OBAR’s Good Neighbor Award have been, Barbara Morgan of Harrell and Associates, John Head of Colony Realty Corp, Myra Ladd-Bone of Atlantic Realty, Holly Austin of Hatteras Realty – Avon, David Pergerson of Carolina Designs Realty, Carolyn Bibeau of Elan Real Estate, Tim Cafferty of Outer Banks Blue, Joe & Ann Lamb of Joe Lamb & Associates, Marsha Brown of Surf or Sound Realty – Rodanthe, and Doug Brindley of Brindley Beach Vacations and Sales.

Says Kelly, “The idea was simple: Why not have a Facebook page that lists Open Houses in our area so potential buyers only have to go to one site to find their dream home?” The idea was unique because no other Association in North Carolina has created anything like it.

  • Craigslist real estate scams on the rise again in the OBX

Last year, the Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® (OBAR) began warning residents of the OBX to be on the look out for scams involving long and short-term rentals on Craigslist. Scammers have begun posting ads on Craigslist looking for potential renters and offer extremely low prices. Some of these ads list legitimate rental companies in the Outer Banks.
