A motorcycle rider was killed Wednesday in a three-vehicle accident on N.C. 168 in Moyock that sent two other people to area hospitals.

The highway was still closed for several hours while the Department of Transportation checked pavement damaged by a fire that erupted after the collision.

Two southbound vehicles were stopped at the traffic signal at Moyock Commons Shopping Center around 4 p.m. when a third slammed into them, according to Currituck County Fire and EMS Deputy Chief Tim Riley.

An SUV and the motorcycle were on fire when rescue crews arrived. Bystanders had already pulled out the driver of the SUV, a statement from Currituck County Fire and EMS Chief Ralph Melton said.

The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver was critically injured and flown out by the Sentara Nightingale helicopter, and the driver of the third vehicle, a pickup, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

Fire crews from the Moyock and Crawford volunteer fire departments put the fire out. The Chesapeake fire department, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol also responded. The Highway Patrol is investigating.

Another crash with injuries occurred about an hour later on N.C. 168. Details were not yet available.
