Free Carolina Shag dance lessons will be presented by the Outer Banks Shag Club at their Monday Night Dance Party.

Lesssons will be offered at 6 p.m. on Mondays from Feb. 25 through March 25 at Duck Woods Country Club.

Jeff and Sandy Albarty and Tommy and Joan Moore will provide beginners with a solid foundation in the state dance of North and South Carolina.

The lessons are expected to last about 30 minutes, followed by practice time and individual help from dance instructors.

The lessons are progressive, so it is suggested to begin on February 25th or as soon after as possible. No pre-registration is necessary.

The Carolina Shag was born along the coastline of the South. Atlantic and Myrtle Beaches report the dance flourishing after World War II.

In the 1980’s, the adults who once earned scorn as teenagers for dancing “unseemly” to Rhythm and Blues music on the jukebox, created a stir by putting out a call for all the old crowd to gather along the Strand in North Myrtle Beach for a Shagging reunion.

Thousands came, an organization developed, Shag Clubs throughout the country were established, and now there are 95 dance clubs from Florida to New Jersey, and from the Outer Banks to Nashville, TN.

The dance is officially a “Swing/Fast Dance” and is easily learned.

The Outer Banks Shag Club has provided Shag Dancing since 1990, with Duck Woods Country Club as their Monday venue for the last two years.

Dancers may enjoy a full meal, a light entree, only a drink, or simply ice tea or water. During the evening, line dances are played, usually followed by a slow dance.

Shag Dancers are proud of their hospitality and light heartedness. “Shag dancing is a blessing,” opined one of shag’s beloved pro dancers. “It’s for fun.”

These beginner dance lessons are an invitation to become part of the rich culture of Coastal Carolina.

The Outer Banks Shag Club is a member of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs, a non-profit organization for the promotion of Shag Dance and Beach Music.
