Kristen Stilson, GIS specialist with the Department of Information Technology is the February 2019 Dare County Employee of the Month. IT Director Matt Hester presented Stilson with the award at the Feb. 4 Board of Commissioners meeting.

Since beginning her career with Dare County in 2017, Stilson has been working on the Geographical Information System The GIS is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data by organizing it into visualizations including maps.

“Kristin has made the GIS easier to use with multiple levels of searching and enhanced functionality. By utilizing some of the latest open source software she has been able to do this with minimal cost for the county,” Hester said during the award presentation.

“Kristen has done an amazing job recreating and updating the county’s GIS online parcel system. I’ve worked with this application for over 20 years and this is the first time I have received positive feedback upon replacing an existing version with a new one,” GIS Coordinator Greg Ball said.

“Her program is incredibly easy to use and has capabilities we have struggled to provide for years. She is building upon this foundation with new and exciting applications to help inform the public and ease the work of county employees.”

Kristen was surprised to receive the award; “I really enjoy being challenged by my job; as soon as you learn a new language, platform or method – another has been developed. I love having the ability to take raw information and display it visually for others to easily access.”

When Stilson isn’t at work she enjoys spending her free time outdoors, hiking, kayaking, walking on the beach, or gardening. She lives in Columbia with her kitten, Marlin and her puppy, Cricket.
