Four people escaped unhurt after a house caught fire early Tuesday in lower Currituck County that involved two residences.

Crews from the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department were called to the 100 block of Dowdy’s Bay Road in Grandy at 12:54 a.m., according to Currituck Fire and EMS Chief Chip Melton.

The house where the fire started was heavily damaged, while a home next door was also damaged.

Firefighting efforts were hampered because there was no hydrant nearby and water had to be shuttled to the scene. It took two hours to bring the fire under control, Melton said.

Assisting were units from Currituck Fire-EMS, Crawford Township, Moyock, Southern Shores, and Kitty Hawk.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Currituck Sheriff’s Office.
