Boy Scouts collecting Christmas trees for dune restoration

By on December 28, 2018

Boy Scout Troop 117 is gathering natural Christmas trees and delivering them to Better Beaches OBX for dune restoration.

Pickup will be Saturday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 6. Text your address to 252-202-4949 or 252-202-1672 and the scouts will do the rest. Let them know if your tree will be by the street or on your porch.

The scouts are also accepting tax-deductible donations to help support local service, conservation projects, camping trips and leadership training. Leave your donation in an enveloped taped to your door.

Dare County and its six municipalities are also reminding residents there are differing policies regarding the disposal of those Christmas trees.

All ornaments, lights, ribbons and decorations must be removed from the tree before it can be discarded.

In unincorporated Dare County (Wanchese, Hatteras Island, Colington, Martin’s Point, East Lake, Stumpy Point), Public Works does not pick up Christmas trees left on the curbside. They can be dropped off at the Dare County Public Works Recycling Center at 1018 Driftwood Drive in Manteo, or the Buxton Transfer Facility at 47027 Buxton Back Road.

In Duck, Waste Management will collect trees during the first two residential trash collections in 2017 on Jan. 7 and Jan. 14.

Christmas trees will be collected curbside in Kill Devil Hills beginning Jan. 9. Place your trees curbside no later than Jan. 8.

Curbside Christmas tree collection is by appointment only in Nags Head. Call 252-441-1122 to schedule your pickup.

In Manteo, trees will be picked up with trash collection on Jan. 10 and Jan. 15. Southern Shores will collect trees during limb and branch pile pickup days. Wreaths are excluded.

Kitty Hawk will pick up trees curbside through the month of January.
