Bitcoin email scam targets Outer Banks businesses

By on December 14, 2018

Police are warning about a hoax bomb threat email sent to media outlets and businesses across the country this week, including here on the Outer Banks.

The email demands payment in cryptocurrency in exchange for preventing a bomb from detonating by the end of the day.

JAM Media Solutions radio stations and at least one Nags Head real estate office received the email.

Nags Head police said the scam is attempting to get money or disrupt business. The FBI says the hoax likely originated overseas, but finding the source will be difficult to downright impossible.

“Do not send money and do not reply to the email,” Nags Head police said.
