The first of two culvert replacement projects along Kitty Hawk Road has been completed, and for now the road has reopened to through traffic.

A pipe running under the road between Shelby Avenue and Moor Shore Road, just west of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, was replaced last week.

The road will remain open to traffic until Monday morning, when the second project will begin between Elijah Baum and Herbert Perry roads, west of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. The closure for that project is scheduled to last until Saturday, Dec. 8.

Emergency vehicles will not be able to travel through the work zone during the closure, and all traffic will have to use U.S. 158 and The Woods Road as a detour.

The replacements were delayed by heavy rain and higher than normal water levels earlier this month.

Once the second project is completed, a final coat of asphalt will be laid over the areas that have been repaired.
