Peter Haines “Pete” Smith of Nags Head, Oct. 7

Peter Haines “Pete” Smith, 79, of Nags Head, NC died Sunday, October 7, 2018, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Born July 27, 1939, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, he was the son of the late James W. and Adelaide M. (Solly) Smith.

He is survived by his wife, M. Kathleen Smith of Nags Head, NC; his daughter, Dianne M. (John) Mercil of Ashburn, Virginia; his stepson, Robert C. (Virginia) Griffith of Bryans Road, Maryland; stepdaughter, Cheri L. (Jon) Corson of California, Maryland; sisters, Valery L. (E. Lavelle) Sullivan and Marion E. (James C.) Miller of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Jack, Luke and Madelyn Mercil and John Griffith; as well as four nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his stepson, John W. Griffith; and nephew, Brian C. Sullivan.

Pete was a pipefitter with the Department of the Navy, working at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head, MD before retiring with 36 ½ years of service. After retirement in 2003, he permanently moved to Nags Head, NC to enjoy his love of the ocean and fishing.

A small gathering to celebrate his life and love of the water will be planned at a later date.
