Brett Barley shot video during high tide Thursday morning of the surf rolling over N.C. 12 just outside Hatteras village. Hurricane Isabel cut an inlet through the same area in 2003.

    We need more areas where overwash is permitted if we want a healthy barrier island. The dune lines strangulate the island and cause erosion on both sides

    Barrier islands vanish without overwash, as Jon writes. We’ve seen decades of sound side erosion because the artificial dunes (yes, most are man made) prevent overwash from replenishing the islands sound side. The same is true of preventing new inlets from opening; the tides ship enormous amounts of fresh sand into the sound and keep the sound side of the islands alive.
