William “Bill” Howell of Kill Devil Hills, Sept. 7

By on September 12, 2018

William “Bill” Howell of Kill Devil Hills was born and raised in Gates County NC/Portsmouth VA. Bill was the son of William Howell Sr. and Penistene Eure Howell.

He and his family lived in Simonsdale, Portsmouth, VA. Bill had a wonderful life —riding the tractor with Uncle Delton, having a red and white Thunderbird, serving in the Army National Guard/Grimes Battery, meeting his wife of 53 years on a blind date — so many cousins!!! — so many classmates which he treasured from Churchland Class of ’58. He enjoyed many years of playing tennis and had an awesome backhand!

Bill married in 1965 to Evelyn Perry, had two children (Beth Kelley and Jay Howell). Bill and Evelyn lived in Western Branch of Chesapeake, VA until they both retired. Bill retired in 2000 from Department of Defense after 35 years. Even after retirement, Bill always found a way of giving back to the community. He organized the Portsmouth Foodbank Drive for 10 years. He also kept the wine on the kitchen counter and supper planned until Evelyn would retire in 2013.

Bill, Evelyn and their sweet puppy, Daisy, then moved to Kill Devil Hills, NC to their Dream home in Kitty Hawk, NC — a home close to both the ocean and the sound.

Many thanks for the love and support from friends, our church family (Kitty Hawk UMC), and especially our dear neighbors who have supported us on this long journey. The family would like to offer our gratitude and love to the caregivers who always treated Bill with respect and dignity. Special thanks to Duke Neurology, Dare County Hospice, and our faithful aides Rodney and Chris.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife (Evelyn), his children (Jay and Beth), and the sunshine of his life – Ethan, his grandson.

Bill will be remembered as a thoughtful, warm and caring individual who thought about others before himself. His unwavering support of his family, his church and his community will always be remembered. He was an avid tennis player for over 50 years and found many tennis friends to love.

Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday September 22, 2018 11 a.m. at Kitty Hawk Methodist Church, 803 W. Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.
