Storm closings, cancellations and postponements this week

More than 30 driver license offices in eastern North Carolina and some in central areas of the state will close Wednesday at noon as the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles prepares for Hurricane Florence.

Road tests and mobile office visits will be canceled in those affected areas.

Closures and changes to office hours can be found on the office locations page of the official NCDMV website at

Many DMV services, including renewing driver licenses, ordering duplicate ID cards or renewing vehicle registrations, can be done online.

Currituck County government offices will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018.

An exception to this will be the Corolla Satellite Office and Library. This facility will open at 8:00 a.m. but will close at 2:00 p.m. to allow staff time to secure the building prior to Hurricane Florence.

An update regarding the county’s operating status for Thursday, Sept. 13 will be provided tomorrow.

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island has announced that it will close to the public beginning Tuesday, September 11, 2018 in anticipation of hazardous weather conditions from Hurricane Florence. The aquarium will remain closed to guests until further notice, and a reopening date will be announced once the weather event is determined to no longer be a danger. Announcements and updates will be posted to the aquarium’s Facebook and Twitter pages and on the aquarium website at

Since a mandatory evacuation has been declared for all of Dare County, the Holy Redeemer by the Sea and Parish Office will close as of 4 p.m. Tuesday. All activities, including Mass, Ministry meetings, etc. are canceled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. The funeral for Glenn Eure has been postponed. We will post a new date as soon as it is chosen. We are planning that Weekend Masses will take place as scheduled.

Currituck County Schools has cancelled all after-school activities Monday and for the remainder of the week.

In addition, due to the mandatory evacuation orders issued for Dare County and the resulting increase in traffic, the Currituck County School District will be closed for students Tuesday, 9/11, through Friday, 9/14.

Staff members will have optional workdays Tuesday and Wednesday. Details for these workdays will be sent via email.

All custodians and maintenance personnel are considered essential personnel for storm preparation, therefore they are required to report for work on Tuesday.

Following the weather event, we will provide school re-opening information based on the evaluation of county and facility conditions.

The Currituck Democratic Party Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 11 has been postponed to Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Barco Library.

The Manteo Post Office will close at 5 p.m. Monday and will not reopen until the evacuation order is lifted. They advise those who have boxes near the floor to empty them in case of flooding.

The Oregon Inlet Task Force and Dare County Working Watermen Commission meetings scheduled for this week have been cancelled.

Dare County Schools will be closed on Tuesday through the remainder of the week. Cape Hatteras Elementary and Cape Hatteras Secondary Schools released early today in response to the mandatory evacuation.

The Board of Education meeting that was scheduled for tomorrow evening has been canceled.

The Currituck County Tourism Advisory Board’s regularly scheduled quarterly meeting on Monday, September 10, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Historic Courthouse located at 153 Courthouse Road, Currituck, NC has been CANCELLED.

Due to Hurricane Florence’s projected path toward the North Carolina coast Dare County’s mandatory evacuation order for visitors and residents, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial will suspend visitor services and temporarily close all visitor facilities at 12 p.m. today.

All College of the Albemarle campuses are closed from Tuesday, September 11 through Friday, Sept. 14. The Dare County campus closed today (Sept. 10) at noon.

The Hatteras Island ‘Day at the Docks’ scheduled for Sept. 15 in Hatteras Village has been canceled for this year.

The Town of Manteo Planning Board meeting for tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 has been canceled and will resume their normal schedule Oct. 9, 2018

The Dare County Shrine Club Sportsman Banquet scheduled for Saturday, September 15 has been canceled. A new date has not been announced.
