Outer Banks Mom: Preparations at Home

With just a week left before school starts here in Dare County, we’re in preparation mode! Next Monday we will send our oldest into the high school and our middle child begins kindergarten.

This is my first time having two kids in full-time school and I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t freaking out just a little bit. I caught up with Physician’s Assistant Kellie Flock of Surf Pediatrics this week to make sure we are doing everything that we can to get both of them ready for the rapidly approaching school year.

Purchasing school supplies and getting new haircuts are the things that are topping the to-do lists this week, but most of our prep can be done right at home.

Kellie’s Top Tips:

  1. Sleep: Get them back into a routine by backing up their bedtime just a few minutes each night. 
  2. Boundaries: It’s a great time to start fresh and put boundaries on things like screen time.
  3. Habits: After a Summer of eating meals on the go while heading to the beach or fun activities, back-to-school time is the perfect time to reset our eating habits by making sure that we have healthy foods available.
  4. Breakfast: So many kids are quick to skip breakfast, get back to basics and remember that it truly is the most important meal of the day.
  5. Update: Don’t forget your well-checkups and sports physicals so that you can update your records with the schools.
