Scholarships awarded to local high school students

By on July 5, 2018

Each year the Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® partners with the Outer Banks Community Foundation to award scholarships to Dare County high school students.

Funding for the OBAR Scholarship fund comes from REALTORS® and community donations at multiple events throughout the year, including bowling, golf and surf fishing tournaments.

Applying through the Outer Banks Community Foundation scholarship portal, applicants are required to complete a detailed application, including an essay. Applicants also need recommendations from teachers or people from the community for consideration.

This year, the Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® Scholarship Committee received 80 applications. The committee, which consists of OBAR members, reviewed each application, meeting on several occasions to determine the potential recipients.

Once the committee narrowed down the choices, the top applicants were interviewed in person.

“We are always extremely impressed with the amazing students in our community that apply for our scholarships. It reassures us that we have intelligent, strong leaders moving into place for the future,” said Cindy Edwards, Scholarship Committee Chair for 2018 and Broker-in-Charge of Century 21 Nachman Realty.

After carefully evaluating each application, 10, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to local college-bound students for their first year in college. Each scholarship was presented personally by a committee member.  This year recipients were Carlos Escobar-Roldan, Sandra Sanchez and Christopher Zavala, all from Cape Hatteras Secondary School, Cole Taylor from Wanchese Christian Academy, Isabell Eckard, Mattie Huband, Leslie Jennings, and Skylar Stultz, all from First Flight High School, and Logan Cecil and Ashlen James from Manteo High School.

Since 1996 the Outer Banks Association of REALTORS®, in partnership with the Outer Banks Community Foundation, has raised a total of $219,631 and awarded 129 scholarships.
