Greg Sherman grabbed a few photos of a manatee swimming in the harbor at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center on Saturday afternoon.

West Indian manatees range up to the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay and it is not uncommon to see them in the ocean and interior waters of the Outer Banks.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says their population is estimated to be at least 13,000, with more than 6,500 in the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico.

Manatees are protected under the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act, and were moved from endangered to threatened status in March 2017.

Why hasn’t US Fish & Wildlife and the National Park Service not temporarily shut down Oregon Inlet Fishing Center since its under their jurisdiction? With charters and transient boats going in and out of that marina, I’m afraid this manatee is going to be hurt or possibly killed! Do something now before it’s too late!

    Alexander Hollingsworth,
You do realize there are manatees in every marina in florida and nobody wants to shut them down. Boats never go faster than idle in a marina. This manatee stands a greater risk of being eaten by a shark than hurt in the oregon inlet fishing center. Check out the video online of the manatee being eaten by the sharks.

OMG! Theres a bird on the beach! Quick! Somebody do something! You’ve got to shut the beaches down now! OMG! Theres a turtle on the beach and cars driving around! Shut the beaches down now! OH! Theres a manatee in the water where its been for thousands of years and boats all around! Close the ocean down before someone runs over it!
Hey Alexander, go look at the front of your car and tell me how many hundreds of bugs you wiped out. Maybe you should quit driving.

OMG! Suggestion (demand?) to ‘shut down the inlet’. Yes, let our hearts bleed for a manatee while we continue to terminate almost a million babies a year under the guise of reproductive freedom. Another reminder how liberalism is truly a mental disorder!

LOL @ Right Hook! You’re right! I say outlaw abortion. THEN, we can take the 1,000,000-2,000,000 unwanted kids and drop everyone of them off at the local republican outpost! Oh, think forward one or two steps….who’s going to take care of them and PAY for them? I know!! You and all the taxpayers are. And what do so called conservatives hate more than someone getting something that they don’t have; having to pay more taxes! Btw, have you looked at the news the last few days. Gotta love how you so called “Christian Conservatives” are being so biblical in the ripping children from their parents down on the southern border. Face it; you are pro-birth, NOT pro-life; all under the guise of being holier than thou. Another reminder how todays sanctimonious conservatism truly is truly a serious psychological cult disorder. Its also obvious to me that you probably took too many “right hooks” to the side of your head.

Um… this was about a manatee. ? Now, we’re aborting fetuses and slamming Christian Conservatives. At least Capt Chris was respectful in his response. How about you both grow up? Whether or not you agree with Alexander Hollingsworth, belittling his comment is not the solution. It just makes you both look like b-holes.

Hey Not a Local! I was responding to a stupid comment. Sorry, I just can’t let stupid go by without saying something!
