Revised plan for new restaurant in KDH earns planners’ OK

A proposal for a new restaurant sailed through the Kill Devil Hills Planning Board on the second try Tuesday after an access on U.S. 158 was eliminated.

The site plan submitted by Albemarle & Associates was first rejected after planners and commissioners balked at using an existing driveway leading to the busy highway over concerns about safety.

With the driveway removed from the site plan, approval was quick and without discussion. The plan next goes back to the Board of Commissioners.

In March, the Planning Board recommended that the Board of Commissioners reject the proposal because of the U.S. 158 access. Two weeks later, the commissioners did.

For safety reasons, a town ordinance prohibits access from U.S. 158 or the west side of N.C. 12 on corner lots that can be reached from a side street.

Submitted by I.G. Holdings, the site plan calls for two lots to be combined for a 3,000-square-foot building on 27,750 square feet of land.

The lot at the corner of Atlantic Street used to be Advanced Tree service. The one next to it has been various businesses, most recently Bizport. Both buildings have been torn down.

John DeLucia of Albemarle & Associates would not reveal the name or kind of restaurant planned but said it would not be a chain.

I wish the opposite were true on the corner of Kitty Hawk Road and 158 for that 7-Eleven gas station. The side entrance to that gas station from Kitty Hawk Rd. is going to get somebody killed at some point or if not killed certainly One heck of an accident especially when left turning cars back up onto 158 because someone’s stopping the flow trying to turn left into that side entrance. KDH did a nice job with this problem by putting in the barrier on Colington Road preventing a left turn into the side entrance of Kangaroo.

Speaking of turning into the Colington Road Kangaroo. To the people that turn left heading north into that Kangaroo; you are not supposed to cross a double yellow! Also, the people that want to turn left onto Colington Rd can’t because they are stuck behind your stupid rear end holding up traffic. ALSO, if you’re heading south and want to turn into the gas station across from Captain Georges… you do realize that your waiting in the freaking turn lane for those heading north!

How about the northbound folks who turn left onto Avalon Drive. That is also an illegal turn, and is never addressed.
