Farmers Market will open monthly in June at Dowdy Park

By on May 10, 2018

Local art, music, homemade baked goods, produce and crafts will be featured at a new monthly Farmers Market this summer in Nags Head.

One of several initiatives by the Arts and Culture Committee, which was appointed by the Board of Commissioners in November of 2016, the Farmer’s Market opens in June and will run through October on the the second Thursday of each month.

“The park was really made for this,” Leslie Erickson, a member of the committee, told town commissioners during a recent presentation of the plan.

Thursday was chosen to avoid competition with the Manteo Farmers Market, which is open  every Saturday through October.

Specifications for the Dowdy Park Farm Market encompass a wide range of offerings, but they must be locally produced, preferably by the vendors themselves.

The town is providing a list of items for prospective vendors, who will need to submit an application for approval by the Arts and Culture Committee. The cost for vendors is $125 a season.

Hours will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Being once a month from June to October tallies to a total of 5 markets (at a total cost of $125). Given the immense availability of locally produced agricultural products, why not hold the market once a week during the summer months? Especially considering what could be overwhelming demand during the tourist season. But I guess the chain grocery stores dotting the bypass have already greased the skids to ensure that will never happen.

Given the positive reaction of the people who I’ve talked to about this farmers market I bet it does go weekly. However, you have to walk before you run and it’s wise to start out once a month. This sounds like a great day !

I would also like to see this happening every Thursday rather than just once a month. Once a week is pretty standard for farmers markets across the country. Why only do it once a month?

Let’s give it a try in June once a week, if that works out then continue weekly. Time to think out-of-the-box in OBX.

I’m so glad to hear this. Love the emphasis on local production. There is also a new market opening in Wanchese which will run every Wednesday and Saturday. Maybe soon the Outer Banks will boast a market in every township!

While I am glad to hear this, the working folks won’t be able to attend. Even on a lunch hour (unless you work within a couple of miles) you wouldn’t have time to drive to, shop, and return in an hour. Why not extend the hours or change to a weekend day?
