Dare County Arts Council and Mano al Hermano will host a Latin-themed First Friday at DCAC’s Gallery in downtown Manteo May 4 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mano al Hermano is co-hosting the May First Friday celebrations with DCAC to increase opportunities for integration and cross-cultural understanding.

“We are thrilled to be part of such a fun opportunity to bring our community together,” said Mano al Hermano Executive Director Ama Frimpong.

The centerpiece of the event is the opening reception of Dare County Arts Council’s May exhibition featuring artwork by Durham-based artist Cornelio Campos.

Campos focuses on three main themes in his art: political issues, including immigration, Mexican folklore with an emphasis on the culture of Michoacán and anthropological symbols from Mexican ethnic groups.

“I am looking forward to visiting the Outer Banks and exhibiting at Dare County Arts Council,” said Campos. “Join me at this colorful exhibition where we can start a dialogue through my paintings.”

The free opening reception will feature delicious Latin food and live music by Latin music group Tropical Mazter. Cristy Garey and Randy Burton will also be performing Latin jazz at Old Tom Street.

Stronger NC OBX will also be present at the event, offering literature about civic engagement and voter registration.

“The members of Stronger NC OBX look forward to supporting this wonderful celebration of cultural diversity,” said Stronger NC OBX co-founder and photographer Cyndi Goetcheus.
