Smoke woke up the owner of a house in Tyrrell County Friday and he was able to escape before fire destroyed it.

Sheriff Darryl Liverman said the call reporting the fire on Jerry Post Office Road came into the Regional 911 Center at 9 p.m.

The Tyrrell Fire Department, Washington-Tyrrell EMS and Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office responded. The Creswell Fire department was also on the scene.

Heat from the fire melted siding on a mobile home next door.

Authorities don’t know yet what caused the fire. The house was a total loss.
