A 19-year-old N.C. State University student died Thursday after an incident involving a paddleboat on the Currituck Sound.

Capt. Mark Rich with N.C. Wildlife Law Enforcement said two men from out-of-town went out on the sound near Grandy sometime after 4 p.m.

Rich said the boat started taking on water and eventually capsized. Water temperatures were estimated to be in the 40s.

The 19-year-old began struggling and his companion was eventually able to hail a passing boater around 5:30 p.m., who then alerted authorities.

The boater brought the two men to shore at Walnut Island, where Rahul Devineni of Cary was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other man was transported to an area hospital. His identity and condition were not immediately available.

Rich said the investigation is ongoing.

Story has been updated to reflect new information on the victim’s identity.
