A Maryland man was charged with allegedly driving while impaired and other counts after a midday crash Tuesday involving three vehicles on U.S. 158 in Nags Head.

Nags Head Police Chief Kevin Brinkley said an officer on routine patrol spotted a white sedan traveling at a high rate of speed in both the inside and center lanes of South Croatan Highway in the vicinity of mile post 16 at 11:24 a.m.

As the officer was turning his cruiser around, the southbound vehicle drifted across the center turn lane into oncoming traffic and collided with a northbound vehicle, Brinkley said.

The car then traveled back across the highway, hit a another vehicle that was traveling southbound, then ran off the road, crashing into a bulkhead in front of the Tanger Outlets.

Michael Christian Fessler, 30, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, was transported to The Outer Banks Hospital for evaluation, and then released into the custody of Nags Head police officers.

The occupants of the other two vehicles were not hurt, according to Brinkley.

Fessler was charged with driving while impaired, transporting an open container of spiritous liquor, careless and reckless driving, failure to maintain lane control and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and was booked into the Dare County Detention Center.
