Deputies watching Mattamuskeet school after SnapChat post

Hyde County sheriff’s deputies have been stationed at the Mattamuskeet school campus after a threatening image was posted on SnapChat Monday.

The post was one of several reported around the state after last week’s school shooting in Florida that killed 17 people.

A student showed a screenshot of the post to school officials, who then reported it to the Hyde County Sheriff’s Office.

A Sheriff’s Office Facebook post said that deputies will be at the school until they are sure there is no threat. The Sheriff’s Office has also consulted with the State Bureau of Investigation.

“The post was a picture of a white male with his face half covered, holding a firearm. Across the screen was written Mattamuskeet Wed. 1:30 along with another school that is not in our county,” the Facebook message said.

It urged parents to talk to their children about the situation. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Hyde Sheriff’s Office at 252-926-3171 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or call Dare County Communications after hours at 252-473-3444.

The Raleigh News & Observer reported simular threats had been received throughout the state, some of them using the same images on social media, including Gates County.
