Deronte White is Nags Head’s top employee for 2017

By on February 13, 2018

Sanitation Technician II Deronte White is the winner of  Nags Head’s 2017 Earl Murray Jr. Employee of the Year award.

Presented by the Board of Commissioners each December, the award is named after Police Sgt. Earl Murray, who died in the line of duty in May 2009. It recognizes employees who excel in attitude toward the public and co-workers, performance, quality of work, willingness to cooperate with others and attendance.

The recipient is chosen from nominees presented by department heads and receives a plaque and a cash reward.

While originally working as a part-time employee for the town, White used his free time to gain essential certifications and skills.

In just over two years of employment, he has obtained his Class B CDL license, which allows him to operate additional equipment, including a knuckle boom truck used to collect brush and bulk items, and a front load truck, which is typically used to collect commercial refuse.

“Deronte takes pride in his work and that pride is evident when I receive a call from a visitor about the sanitation driver who was getting out of his truck walking through the water in south Nags Head to roll the carts to the truck to empty them,” said Nags Head Public Works Director Ralph Barile. “She said, ‘not only did he meet me at the end of my driveway to empty my can, he asked me to wait there so I didn’t have to walk in the water later to retrieve it.’ ”

Nominees for this year’s Earl Murray Jr. Employee of the Year award were:

  • Sanitation Equipment Operator II Deronte White
  • Police Officer Michael Alvarez
  • Customer Service Rep/Cashier Brittany Phillips
  • Code Enforcement Officer Ed Snyder
  • Fire Fighter/Driver Operator Chris Trembly
