Gates County Sheriff Randy Hathaway was arrested Monday after his indictment on multiple charges, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.

Hathaway, 47, has been charged with obtaining property by false pretense, failure to discharge duties and one count of obstruction of justice, an SBI statement said.

A Superior Court judge granted District Attorney Andrew Womble’s petition to remove Hathaway from office. Deputy Robert Jordan was appointed interim sheriff.

Three Gates deputies were also charged with obtaining property by false pretense, and their arrest warrants were served in court, the statement said. Jordan suspended the three deputies, Capt. Glenda Parker, 54; Deputy Levar Newsome, 38; and Deputy Tobe Ruffin, 28.

In December, the SBI arrested Sgt. Brandon Hawks, 33, on six counts of embezzlement of property by a public officer and one count of obstruction of justice, the statement said. His father, Scott Hawks, 54, was also arrested Monday on two counts of possession of a stolen firearm.

Womble said the officers were indicted on charges related to falsely claiming work with Gates County Schools, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

Hathaway was released under a $10,000 secured bond; Parker and Newsome were each released under a $5,000 bond; and Ruffin was released under $20,000 bond, according to the Pilot.

The petition to remove the sheriff was sealed by the judge.
