Wayne Rex Sample, loving husband, father, and coach fought the last of his 44-year battle with cancer on January 13, 2018, at the age of 61. He died in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family and lifelong friends.

Rex will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 20 years, Jackie Ricks-Sample, daughters Margie Sample and Nikki Couch, and his faithful dog, Coco. Also left to cherish his memory are his brother, Ricky and wife, Vickie, and sister-in-law, Betz Blowe and husband Danny. Rex was predeceased by his parents, Aubrey and Peggy, and brother, Aubrey Jr.

Rex is remembered as a man with a big heart who loved his time teaching and coaching at First Flight Middle School. Sports were his passion, beginning with his love of tennis, then evolving into his love of golf where he was recognized for 11 hole-in-ones. One of his greatest sources of pride were the years spent volunteering at The Masters in Augusta.

The family is so grateful to his lifelong circle of friends who were always there to offer love and support. Although impossible to name them all, we would especially like to thank Carl and Diane Overman, Bobbi and Wayne White, Robert Poston and Loretta Jolly, John and Nancy Vaughan, Eddie and Sue Ingram, Dan and Ann York, Tony and Nancy King, Wanda Jordan, Brad Neal and our special lifesavers, Kelley and Nina.

A Celebration of Life in memory of Rex will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 2:00 pm at First Flight Middle School, 109 Veterans Drive, Kill Devil Hills with Rev. Charles Gill officiating. A reception will follow at Mako Mike’s at 1630 N. Croatan Hwy., Kill Devil Hills.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rex’s memory to the Outer Banks Community Foundation to help establish The Rex Sample Award for Courage and Determination, a scholarship fund for tennis players who exemplify strong character. If you would like to donate, please make checks payable to “OBCF” (13 Skyline Road, Southern Shores, NC 27949) and note “Rex Sample Award” in the memo.
