One dead after Avon accident involving Dare trash truck

One man died after two-vehicle accident on N.C. Highway 12 in south Avon late Friday morning.

Traffic on N.C. Highway 12 was stopped on both sides of Ace Hardware and the Food Lion shopping plaza in Avon from about 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., when traffic slowly resumed in both directions.

The accident involved a Dare County sanitation truck and a white van.


WAVY-TV reported that the driver of the van, 45-year-old Juan Carlos Pajares-Fernandez of Nags Head, died after being flown to Sentara Norfolk General hospital in a Coast Guard helicopter. The driver of the sanitation truck was taken to The Outer Banks Hospital.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office, local fire departments, and Dare County EMTs were on the scene. It was also reported that the Coast Guard helicopter was sent to the scene.
