Closing time! Bridge over Alligator River shuts for a week

A problem with the draw span shut the bridge down for more than an hour over Thanksgiving weekend. (NCDOT)

Travelers on U.S. 64 across the Alligator River will need to plan on the trip taking at least an extra hour starting at midnight Wednesday, when the draw span of the Lindsay C. Warren Bridge is closed for another round of rehabilitation work.

The closure, which will also prevent boaters on the Intracoastal Waterway from passing through, will be in place through Tuesday, Jan. 16.

According to a NCDOT news release, the closing will allow crews to repair and replace electrical and mechanical components located beneath the bridge’s swing span.

And it will take more than just a week to finish, so another week-long closure will have to be scheduled in March, but the exact dates have not been set.

The draw underwent renovations in spring 2013, when the steel structure was jacked up and removed from the turntable it sits on.

The center pivot and eight balance wheels were replaced, while the gear and drive shafts underwent maintenance. That closure lasted two weeks.

The work is part of an extensive renovation project designed to extend the life of the 58-year-old, two-lane bridge. The $16.7 million contract was awarded to Flatiron Constructors of Morrisville last March.

During the closure, NCDOT will have detour signage and variable message signs in place to guide motorists through detour routes.

Motorists traveling to and from areas west of Williamston are advised to travel through Elizabeth City via U.S. 158 and U.S. 17. while travelers to and from Tyrrell and Washington counties should use N.C. 94 and U.S. 264.

I can’t believe they picked a holiday weekend. That cuts down on many coming. I had a group planning on a trip to my beach house and now because of the extra traveling time they have cancelled. We don’t need to discourage tourists. I guess the next weekend will be Easter! Good planning.

Just wondering why this bridge would be closed during the only holiday (3-day) we have from now until Easter? Not a great way to welcome guests or get away!

a holiday weekend was a ridiculous decision…did anyone actually think this through? Lots of people come to the OBX on three day weekends…
