Jens Beauford Edwards of Southern Shores, Dec. 12

By on January 2, 2018

Jens Beauford Edwards, Jr., 70, of Southern Shores, died unexpectedly on December 12, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Martha; sisters, Barbara Edwards Ames, and Gloria Edwards Crooks Wetmore; nephews David Ames, Jr., Erick Ames, and L. Daniel Crooks; and niece, Catherine Crooks Hill.

J.B. was born in Portsmouth, VA to Irene Shiflett Edwards and Jens Beauford Edwards. At Woodrow Wilson High School, he was an all-state football player and co-captain of his team. He was the first recipient of the Ernie Houghton Memorial Award given to the outstanding defensive player.

He earned a scholarship to Duke University where he was a three-year letterman and was elected captain of the team his senior year. After graduation, J.B. pursued several occupational ventures and ultimately became a custom home builder on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

J.B. loved a good story and was quite the storyteller himself, a trait he inherited from his Norwegian grandfather. One of his passions was fishing on his boat with friends and being out on the ocean. He was also an avid fisherman with his team The Crooked Hooks. He was a true leader in every endeavor he undertook and did so with a quick wit and always a joke to tell. He will be missed and loved by all but will be remembered as a true and respected “Captain.”

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 12, 2018, at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo, NC. A reception will follow at The Sandtrap Tavern at Sea Scape Golf Links in Kitty Hawk, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in J.B.’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
