Barbara West of Manteo, December 9

By on December 11, 2017

On the 9th of December 2017, our beloved Barbara West passed away, onto Heaven. Barbara was from Pikeville, North Carolina, where she worked alongside her father, Roy West, in their Family Fruit Stand for many years. She was a breath of strength and a vision of beauty, living happily and working hard.

As a child, Barbara attended Pikeville schools, until the 10th grade when she transferred to Goldsboro High School as the family business had relocated. She studied there until graduation.

Later, Barbara had a beautiful baby girl named Harriet and devoted her life to her. Barbara then worked for many years at Belk-Tyler’s Of Goldsboro where she walked to and from every day, in heels, and jokingly commented this gave her a good figure.

She also worked at the Kemp Furniture factory, as well as working for several happy years at Seymour Johnson Airforce base. Here, she worked at the Base Exchange and ABC store.

In 1988, Barbara moved to Manteo, NC to live near her daughter, Harriet Shannon-Reardon, and her only granddaughter, Jennifer Nichole Shannon-Cavalier. She loved Dare County and enjoyed her work at Moncies of Manteo, The Lost Colony Book Store, and Super-Wings of Nags Head.

Barbara loved life and loved working with so many different people, especially the foreign exchange students of Wings. There she was invited to parties and really enjoyed her summers working with young people.

Her most favorite event ever was her high school reunion trip to Germany, where she found a love for German beer.

Barbara was like a diamond-strong, vibrant, and filled with dreams. She was brave beyond belief and had an unbreaking willpower.

She was everything to everyone around her and she was the most unique grandmother anyone could ever have. She was loved more than words can express by her daughter and granddaughter.

When Barbara reaches Heaven, she will be reunited with her grandparents, Joshua and Ophelia Creech of Pinelevel, NC; her father, Roy West; her mother, Verona Creech West; and her sisters, Ann and Rose. As well as her best friend and aunt, Jean Creech; her favorite nephew, John Malfy, Jr.; and several aunts and uncles including Virginia and Frank Tyndall.

Here on Earth, she leaves behind her daughter, Harriet and son-in-law Phillip Reardon; her granddaughter, Nikki and husband Beau; two great-grandchildren, Damien and Dalila; her nieces, Liza Alrajhi, Margaritte Malfy, and Debbie Malfy; as well as their children, Billy, Aidan, Shrijana, and Neela; cousins, Gail and Gene Tyndall; her childhood friend, Christine Weaver; and many OBX friends.

A special thanks to the fantastic staff of Peak Resources – Outer Banks in Nags Head, NC for making Barbara feel at home in her last days. We are eternally grateful for the peaceful way she was able to make her departure. Barbara left this world with her daughter holding her hand while listening to her most favorite Christmas song, White Christmas.

She left us, knowing how much she was loved and what an amazing legacy she has left behind in her child and grandchildren.

Memorial services will not be held until April. Her ashes will then be spread over the waters, at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, just as she wanted. Please contact the family via email for more details,
