Charles Delo Meade of Kitty Hawk, Dec. 5

Charles Delo Meade, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at home in Kitty Hawk on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at the age of 97.

Delo was a World War II veteran serving with the 691st Tank Destroyer Battalion in France. Working in the coal mines for 20 years, Delo also owned and operated several businesses in Coeburn, VA.

In 1983, he retired to Kill Devil Hills but continued to work for Sun Realty for many years.


Delo was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Steven; his parents, Carrie and Robert Meade; daughter-in-law, Donna Meade; son-in-law, Jimmy Hewett; a brother, Robert Meade; and sisters, Wanda Carico, Lorna Cutchinson, Elizabeth Johnson, Manilla Downy, Clairmoude Beard, and Mary Meade.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Frances Stallard Meade; his children, Brenda Horne (Charles) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Carole Thompson (Don) of Blountville, TN, Pam Maine (Michael) of Bristol, VA, Charles Meade (Roberta) of Blountville, TN, Greg Meade and Laura Woodruff of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Chris Hewett of Kitty Hawk, NC; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, December 8, 2017, at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo with Rev. Ken Mann officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VFW Foundation, 406 West 34th Street, Ste. 920, Kansas City, MO 64111 or online at
