Federal officials along with representatives from state and local governments are meeting Thursday in Virginia Beach to get an update on proposed offshore wind energy projects.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will be hosting a Virginia and North Carolina Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force Meeting at the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The meeting will bring together the Commonwealth of Virginia and State of North Carolina Renewable Energy Task Force members to discuss progress regarding renewable energy leases off the northern Outer Banks and Virginia Beach.

Will Waskes, Project Coordinator with the Buerau of Ocean Energy Management, and Craig Poff and Keith Morrison, Avangrid Renewables, LLC are scheduled to speak at 10 a.m. to provide an update on the Kitty Hawk Lease.

Avangrid is the same company that built and operates the Amazon East Wind Farm in Pasquotank and Perquimans counties, and in March won an auction to lease 122,405-acres of ocean just over the horizon off Corolla, Duck and Southern Shores.

The public will also have an opportunity to address the group during a comment session between noon and 12:30 p.m.

More information on the meeting can be found at https://www.boem.gov/Virginia/.
