Sgt. Murray Memorial Christmas Fund event set for Dec. 20

In the early morning hours of May 15, 2009, Nags Head Police Sergeant Earl Murray was dispatched to a burglary in progress. While responding to this call, Sgt. Murray lost control of his police vehicle, striking a cement utility pole and was killed instantly.

Murray was a veteran law enforcement officer with over 26 years of experience. He loved being a “cop” and truly believed in the age-old code of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

Sgt. Murray left behind a wife, Kim, and two daughters, Sami Jo and Paige. He also left behind hundreds of friends and co-workers from across North Carolina who will always remember him as an honorable man with a great sense of humor.

The idea of hosting a “Sgt. Earl Murray Children’s Christmas Fund” came directly from the Murray family. According to his family, Earl held a special affection for the Christmas Season.

He always looked forward to giving Christmas presents to others and loved the surprise and happiness they brought to others, but he also enjoyed receiving them too! He understood that giving gifts is a gesture to show someone that you were thinking of them. Receiving gifts means that someone had done the same.

The Murray family wishes to share these same sentiments with the children in Dare County who may otherwise not know the joy of this special holiday.

The “Sgt. Earl Murray Children’s Christmas Fund” will be an annual event to help local children throughout Dare County.

Each December, less fortunate children ages 7-14 will be escorted on a $100 shopping spree by a local public safety officer. Earl’s love of Christmas, children and helping others makes this project extra special for his family and friends giving them an exceptional way to remember him each year.

This year’s event will be held on Monday, December 20th, beginning at 6:00 P.M. at the Kill Devil Hills Kmart.

Santa Claus will be there to see the children. Cookies and drinks will be provided.

We look forward to seeing each of you at the Annual Sgt. Earl Murray Children’s Christmas Fund shopping event!
