Stephany (Penny) Ingram of Southern Shores, Nov. 30

Stephany (Penny) Ingram, 79, passed away at home in Southern Shores on Thursday, November 30, 2017, after a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving husband Don and family members.

Penny was born in Philadelphia, PA, moved with her family to Mansfield, OH, and then to Boston, MA where she lived with her mother and grandmother during World War II while her father was in the Navy. After his return home, she moved to Baltimore, MD where she grew up, attended school and college.

She met her future husband, Don, during that time and was married when she graduated from Towson University and began teaching elementary school in the greater Baltimore area. Then came twelve moves with the Army, six children, and jobs as a teacher, child enrichment center director, and store owner. Over the years with the Army, she and her family lived in several states. Her travels included Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, Puerto Rico, and Korea.


She and Don moved to the Outer Banks in 2001. Animals have always been a part of her life. As a young woman, while President of the Junior Kennel Club of Maryland, she traveled to New York City and participated in the Westminster Kennel Club show as a runner for the professional handlers when it was their turn to enter the ring. She became a member of the Board of Directors for the Outer Banks SPCA in 2006.

Penny was a member of the Dunes of Dare Garden Club. While a member she volunteered her services to Spring Arbor of The Outer Banks. Penny enjoyed playing bridge with the “Bridge Group”, traveling, especially cruising, caring for animals, and gardening.

She is survived by her loving husband Don of 57 years; six children, sons Jeffrey and Kevin, daughters Meighan, Holleigh, Joelle, and Kathleen; thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Penny was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

A funeral service for Penny will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC with the Reverend Thomas Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service.
