Help make holidays merry and bright for adoptable animals

The N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island is preparing to get festive and furry with the annual Santa Paws Pet Supply Drive, which benefits the Outer Banks SPCA.

Last year, with generous support from visitors and neighbors, NCARI was able to donate more than 4,500 pounds of pet food and other supplies to help animals still waiting to find their forever homes.

The drive began Monday, Nov. 20 and ends Jan. 4. The purpose of the yearly drive is to benefit shelter animals, but donors get perks as well.

A bag of dry pet food that weighs 7 pounds or more will earn the donor free admission to the aquarium, and anyone who donates pet food or other supplies will be entered for a chance to win a one-of-a-kind painting created by resident artist Molly the River Otter.

Other items needed at the Outer Banks SPCA include sheets, blankets, towels, peroxide, cotton balls, dog and cat toys, flea bath shampoo, puppy and kitten formula, collars, leashes and more.

The N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is dedicated to the mission of “Inspiring appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments.” The aquarium is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
