All the hardware is coming back to the northeast corner of the state from Pinehurst, as the Currituck women’s golf team and Katherine Schuster of First Flight swept the 1A/2A NCHSAA championship tournament on Tuesday.

The freshman phenom from Kill Devil Hills shot a 2-over, 74, second round to finish even par and claim medalist honors by ten shots over Mallory Fobes of Forbush at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

The Nighthawks have now claimed individual state championships in each of the last three school years, with wrestling producing multiple titlists the last two seasons.

Bailee Twiford of Currituck came in third, firing 10-over for the tournament, to lead the Knights to their first state championship in golf.

Twiford teamed with Brittney Tindall (+22, T-29th) and Sarah Conley (+30, 42nd) for a total score of 551 to win the team title by 19 shots over Mount Airy.

The Knights’ women’s golf team joins the 1986 men’s basketball and 1991 and 1993 softball teams as state champions.
