Eileen Meraklis, a staff nurse in the Medical Surgical Unit, is The Outer Banks Hospital’s October 2017 Employee of the Month. Meraklis joined the hospital in February, 2013, after working at Brandywine Hospital in West Chester, Penn.

Meraklis’ team members are quick to describe her as “phenomenal, special, professional, unstoppable, full of energy and simply perfect to work with,” according to a statement from the hospital.

Meraklis is a textbook example of a bedside registered nurse and an excellent leader in the role of charge nurse, displaying exceptional organizational and communication skills, the statement said.

Meraklis integrates knowledge, experience and best practices into patient care with safety as a priority, according to the statement, and is held in high regard by the providers, staff, and her peers. In addition to making sure the workflow is centered on patients, she is known for collaborating with other departments, which is demonstrated by the positive feedback she receives.

Meraklis also promotes teamwork on the unit and is often hosting celebrations for team members. She contributes to bringing new staff on board and is fast to help them feel welcomed and part of the team, the statement said.

“I’m speechless. Thank you,” Meraklis said, upon being named Employee of the Month.

“I work with an amazing group of people here at OBH, but especially the med/surg staff with whom I share this recognition,” she added.

“When I leave for work in the morning, my husband says ‘make a difference’ and I guess this award makes me think there are days that I actually do! Thank you so much.”
