Authorities found a basketball stuffed with marijuana and other items Saturday after receiving a call about a suspicious vehicle near the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm.

Prison staff searched the area after hearing about the vehicle and found a basketball with black tape around it in the prison yard, Tyrrell County Sheriff Darryl Liverman said in an e-mail. It had apparently been thrown over a fence onto the prison property.

When they open it, they found packaged marijuana, loose tobacco, rolling papers, three cigarette lighters and three T-shirts, Liverman said. The pot weighed in at 74.6 grams, which is about 2.6 ounces.

A crackdown on drugs at the prison by the Sheriff’s Office has resulted in charges against 25 inmates since May, Liverman said.
