Each month, Brenda Thacker of the Dare County Savings Lives Task Force writes a column highlighting the people, activities, and programs that are a part of this important community organization.

Debbie and Craig Jones are relative newcomers to the Saving Lives Task Force. They relocated to the Outer Banks in April of 2016. Because their lives have been impacted by the drug addiction of a loved one, they felt the need to give back to the community: They started with the Saving Lives Task Force.

When I asked Debbie her thoughts concerning the Task Force, she replied, “My husband and I play a very minor role with the Task Force, but there are many talented and caring people who are willing to do the heavy lifting. We are proud to be associated with the great work of this group of dedicated persons.”

Debbie and Craig attended a Nar-Anon Group before they moved to the Outer Banks. They were hoping to find a local Nar-Anon Group to attend. As there was no such group in Dare County, they decided to start one.

They began the “Island of Hope” in April 2017. The group meets every Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Source Church in Manteo.

Just as NA (Narcotics Anonymous) provides steps for the person sick with addiction to achieve sobriety, Nar-Anon provides ways of coping, and ideally, achieving serenity when dealing with the pain of watching a loved one sink into the abyss of addiction.

I asked Debbie if she had witnessed any changes in substance use in the short time she and Craig have been members of the Task Force. She said she couldn’t comment on an increase or decrease but went on to say that there are some passionate people on the Saving Lives Task Force who are dedicated to fighting what is being recognized as a national epidemic.

“The fight won’t be easy, and the Task Force can’t do it alone. It will take the entire community working together to win the fight. And make no mistake — this will be a tough fight. This enemy will take everything you own and then, if unchecked, will take your life.
