A swimmer died Sunday afternoon after being found floating face down near the Frisco Pier on southern Hatteras Island.

The 64-year-old man was spotted around 3:55 p.m. He was brought to shore, but attempts to revive him by Dare County EMS were unsuccessful, according to a Cape Hatteras National Seashore news release.

His name and hometown have not been released. He was the seventh swimming-related fatality off Seashore beaches this year, said National Park Service Outer Banks Group superintendent David Hallac.

A high risk of rip currents was forecast Sunday by the National Weather Service on Hatteras Island.

Although rip currents were reported in the area and the individual was found in the water, the exact cause of death is not yet known, according to the release.
