Currituck’s Operation Santa Claus accepting applications

By on October 5, 2017

“Operation Santa Claus” is underway in Currituck County, and residents may apply for Christmas assistance with the county’s department of social services through Dec. 8.

Applications are available at the Currituck County Department of Social Services office, located at the Currituck Judicial Center, 2793 Caratoke Highway in Currituck.

Applications must be returned to DSS offices by Dec. 8; late applications won’t be accepted. Children must live in Currituck County to be eligible.

If you already receive benefits, you won’t need to provide any verification of need when you apply. If you don’t receive any benefits, call (252) 232-3083 to find out what to bring when applying.

Currituck DSS will coordinate most of the Operation Santa Claus activities. Want to pitch in? Here are several ways to help out:

  • To donate food or money for the Food Baskets for the Elderly program, call Carla Mebane, (252) 232-6039.
  • To donate money or gift cards for the county’s foster children, call Peggy Whitlow, (252) 232-6042.
  • To donate new toys for children, call Larry Czernik with Toys for Tots, (252) 619-0523.
  • To sponsor children in Currituck County by providing gifts directly to a family, email Dawn Smith or call (252) 267-1140. She will also accept donations of new toys.
  • If you’d like to sponsor children and provide gifts, social services asks that you make arrangements to meet the family and distribute the gifts directly, which can be done at the department of social services.

Checks should be made payable to “Currituck County” and mailed to 153 Courthouse Road, Suite 400, Currituck, N.C., 27929.

For further information, contact Samantha Hurd, director, Currituck County Department of Social Services, (252) 232-3083.
