Harry B. Herzer III of Manteo, Sept. 25

Dr. Harry B. Herzer III passed away Monday, September 25, 2017, at the age of 83.

Harry was born in Emporia, Kansas in 1934, graduated from the College of Emporia, and was briefly in the Chemical Corps division of the Army. After that, he pursued his Teacher’s Certificate and taught chemistry, math, and biology at several local high schools.

After earning a doctorate at Oklahoma State University, he was offered a position with NASA’s Aerospace Education Program. He carried lunar samples to many strange places, one of which was Lexington, KY, where he met Arlene, his bride of 42 years.


After retiring from NASA, Harry and his family moved from Maryland to the Outer Banks, where he had many passions. He was very active in Theatre of Dare, Friends of Youth, Stamp Club, Scottish Libation Society of Roanoke Island, Civil War Roundtable, Masonic Lodge, and Birds Fly Men Drink Society. Harry also regularly attended biennial ChemEd conferences.

Harry is remembered as a loving husband, beloved father, dear friend, and phenomenal storyteller. Harry is survived by his wife Arlene, son Paul, daughter Kristi, and countless other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, with burial to follow at Manteo Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Friends of Youth, Dare County Animal Shelter, Theatre of Dare, or Dare County Library.
