Julio Salvador Zafra Espino of Manteo, Sept. 8

Julio Salvador Zafra Espino, age 99, of Manteo died Friday, September 8, 2017, at his home.

Born in Malabrigo, Trujillo, Peru on February 5, 1918, he was the son of the late Andres Zafra and Blanca Espino.

Mr. Zafra is survived by his six children, Julio Zafra, Jr. and wife, Emma Zafra, Norma Barreto and husband, Juan Barreto, Noelia Zafra, Blanca Zafra, Juan Julio Zafra, and Maria Serna; eleven grandchildren, Alina Zafra, Giovanna Calvillo, Cynthia Crabtree, Carmen Puerto, Jonatan Zafra, Pamela Carranza, Priscilla Etheridge, Monica Zafra, Fallon Zafra, Mildred Shaw, and Stephanie Zafra; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many more Zafra family members including his sister, brothers, nieces and nephews.


Along with his parents, Mr. Zafra was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Juana Zafra; and his great-grandchild, Christine Crabtree.

Mr. Zafra worked as a butcher for 40 plus years until he came to the United States in 1992. Upon his arrival in the US, he worked at the Dunes Restaurant. Everyone knew him as “Papa” but to his family, he was known as “Papa Viejito.”

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dare County Home Health and Hospice for their loving care and support.

A viewing will be held from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo on Saturday, September 9, 2017, with a wake service beginning at 5:00 pm.
