Umstead Bridge repairs delayed until after Irma passes

By on September 7, 2017

A second round of repair work on the William B. Umstead Bridge has been delayed by the N.C. Department of Transportation until after the threat from Hurricane Irma passes.

During the closure that will last around five days, crews will be repairing a number of metal joints on the 60-year-old bridge’s deck.

While the Old Manns Harbor Bridge remains safe for vehicle traffic, the repairs need to be completed as soon as possible to keep it that way.

During the closure, motorists can still travel between Roanoke Island and the mainland by using the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge.
