Elaine Flowers Winstead Martin, 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Colington Harbour Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Born in Elm City, NC on August 16, 1924, to the late O.J. (Jack) Winstead and Myrtle Flowers.

She attended The University of Mary Washington, raised her family in Florida, then returned to the Northern Virginia area and worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce until retiring to the Outer Banks.

Elaine was a dedicated and hardworking member of the Outer Banks community. She was a thirty-year breast cancer survivor and an American Cancer Volunteer Driver in addition to volunteering her time for “Meals on Wheels.” Elaine absolutely enjoyed her time with her friends at the Baum Center, most recently playing bridge, billiards, and canasta. In the past, she enjoyed the aerobics classes, table tennis, and all the luncheons and camaraderie the Baum Center provides.

Elaine was the beloved wife of the late Hugh Martin and devoted mother of Dennis Martin. Larry Martin, and Nancy Archibald (Steve). In addition to her children, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Christine, Nicholas, and Andrew Archibald, Tracy, Patrick, Dylan, Hallie, and Anna Martin; and a great-grandson, Hennessee.

Upon retiring to the Outer Banks, Elaine attended hundreds of ball games and competitions of her grandchildren, always on the sidelines, cheering them on. An amazingly strong and independent woman, Elaine was encouraging, supportive, dry-witted, enthusiastic, competitive, feisty, independent, loving. She was all these things and will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later time. Memorial donations may be made to Dare Hospice, P.O. Box 669, Manteo, NC 27954.
