Bright and refreshing beers tailored for summer sipping

As summer sets in, we ask ourselves the most important question of our time. What great beers should I be drinking today? Summer sun, heat and outdoor lounging give us plenty of opportunities to enjoy great beers that are perfect to chase away the humidity.

In general, we find a lot of bright and refreshing beers that are brewed to be lower in alcohol for long sessions of drinking. Wheats, session IPAs and fruit-flavored beers own this time of year. Let’s explore a few outstanding options.

On the wheat front, you can’t beat Outer Banks Brewing Station’s Lemon Grass Wheat.

This amazing unfiltered beer provides a crisp, tart and refreshing option for hanging on the beach. The bright smack of lemongrass adds just enough pop to differentiate it from other hefeweizen beers that are available this time of year.

As an added bonus, you can enjoy this OBX favorite in cans. Now this beer is even better to bring to the beach, on the boat or hanging by the pool.

Maybe you are a hop head that can’t get enough IPAs and are disappointed that wheat and fruit beers are all over the place during this season.

Don’t despair!

The latest round of session IPAs are popping up all over the place.

These low-alcohol IPAs are perfect for long days fishing and afternoon BBQs that stretch into late night parties.

At under 5 percent ABV, this new style of IPA still provides a nice kick of hops to satisfy your craving. Top picks for this summer include Captain Lawrence Grapefruit Session IPA, Founder’s All Day IPA in a brand new 19oz can, Factory Girl from Parkway Brewing Company and Highland Brewing’s Daycation IPA.

Summer wouldn’t be the same without some fruit beers to liven it up. We aren’t talking about over-the-top fruit ales that are sticky sweet. There are some excellent summer beers with hints of fruit that don’t dominate the flavor of the beer. 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon is always a favorite in our house. Brewed with real watermelon and available in cans, this is a perfect beer for watching the waves beat against the warm sand.

Similarly, Wicked Weed’s Coolcumber provides a perfect hint of crisp cucumber with amazing herbal saison flavors, which is perfect for pool side enjoyment.

We can probably call 2017 the summer of the Gose.

Goses are an old German style that has made a huge comeback in the past couple years.

As an unfiltered wheat with a crisp and twangy finish, Goses are low hop beers with a sharp finish from added salt.

Some amazing ones to sip on the beach include Tarboro’s Seedspitter Watermelon Gose, Westbrook Gose, Hi-Wire Gose, Wicked Weed Pacific Most Mango & Guava Gose, Destihl Brewing.

Whatever summer fun you find yourself getting in to, remember to grab a new beer this season. Whether it is relaxing on the beach, hanging by the pool or drinking away the stress of dealing with kids who are out of school, there is a summer beer that goes perfect with it.

Have a safe and tasty summer!
