In the mood for some jerky?

If dehydrated beef is what you’re hankering for, you can get all you want right here on the Outer Banks.

Beef Jerky Outlet, a new Kitty Hawk business that sells more than 100 varieties of jerky, opened June 1 in the Sea Dunes Shops shopping center. So far, business has been pretty good.

“It’s been very well accepted,” said Vince McDonnell, who co-owns the local franchise with his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Kevin McCoy. “We’re very pleasantly surprised at the amount of business we’ve had.”

Amy McCoy agreed. “We’re doing very well,” she said. “We hope the locals like us, because we’re open year round.”

McDonnell said he had no idea how popular beef jerky has become, until his daughter and son-in-law began researching it and sharing with him what they’d learned.

“It’s very high in protein. I think that’s why it is so popular,” he said. “The athletes like to eat it because it’s very high in protein and very low in fat,” he added.

McDonnell said the store sells two main types of jerky: the traditional, dehydrated variety, which can be fairly tough, and a smoked version from Michigan that is more tender and easier to chew.

Don’t know which you might prefer? You don’t have to buy anything without tasting it, McDonnell said, as free samples of every variety are available at the shop.

The Kitty Hawk location is Beef Jerky Outlet’s 100th store. The company was founded in 2010 and is the country’s first national jerky franchise. The company is headquartered in Kodak, Tenn.
